Reorganising my rings + DAISO Haul

I was on a mission when I entered DAISO today. Usually I just wander around, throwing things into my cart, but this time I was really well-behaved and I just headed straight to what I needed.

The first thing I really must must must purchase was a container for my rings. My LV container was great at first, but as I continued bingeing on rings, it became too small. :( Hence, I really needed something practical to store my ever-growing collection of rings!

Crazy mountain of rings that I had. I counted over 90. I have gone mad.

This is the container that I bought! It's spacey enough inside and it's stackable! So yay!

The second thing that I really needed was one of those nifty medicine boxes, in which you can store your meds in it by the serving. You know, one box storing one day's worth of meds, so that you don't forget, and so that you can bring your meds while travelling, without lugging around huge bottles of meds.

So I got this blue medicine box and yay now I'm looking forward to my Genting trip! :)

Yes I take quite a number of supplements everyday. It struck me not long ago that I'm no longer as young as I used to be, and hence my health has deteriorated. I just take EPO (evening primrose oil - great for period pains and good skin), vitamin e (for good skin) and the normal multi-vitamins.

EPO is really quite magical. Ever since I took it (June 2012 or thereabout), I have extremely minimal period pains. Even for those first-day cramps.

I stocked up on some tea and got myself some green tea and roasted green tea. I usually drink tea every night before I sleep, and since I can't be bothered with brewing tea leaves and all that, I just rely on good ol' tea bags.

I also got some insoles. This was an extremely important purchase because I needed some insoles for my too-big Dr Marts! I bought my shoes in size 39 because 38 was too tight, and alas, 39 proved to be too loose to be worn on its own. So before insoles, I used to spam socks and I would have blistering hot feet all day. Blergh.

The insoles worked wonderfully and yay to a nicely-fitting Dr Marts now! :)

DAISO is simply the best store on Earth. I can already imagine my future home, all furnished with nifty gadgets from DAISO.

Review: KATE My Colour Pencil in SV-3 and PK-3

The KATE My Colour Pencil set was also included in the KATE Cosmetics Bundle sold during the Watsons Members Sale (the bundle was S$9.90!).

It's quite a nifty product because KATE sells the casing and the eye pencils separately! So for those of you who love getting the adrenaline rush from DIY products, maybe you will get some from this? :)

At the moment when I was at Watsons, the package that was sold at Bukit Panjang Plaza's Watsons included only these colours - SV-3 and PK-3. I saw some related haul posts by other bloggers and some of them got the navy one and some the dark brown one!

Packaging: Quite a fun and reasonably thoughtful product. Fun because you get to "build" your own KATE My Colour Pencil and thoughtful if you have all the pencil colours. So, if today you feel royal-ish, you change the pencil heads to purple and gold and you have your eyeliner/eyeshadow and it's portable for touch-ups! Of course, the point is you have to have more than two pencil heads to be able to enjoy this function, which I don't, so boo. :(

Colour: SV-3 is a gorgeous, almost festive looking silver shimmer. It's an excellent colour to apply on the inner eye corners to make the wearer look more awake and of course give the illusion of larger eyes. I think SV-3 is going to be a staple in my eye makeup routine. PK-3 is a less glittery hot pink, with more shine than SV-3. I don't normally wear pink on the upper eyelid, but I figure this is good for times when I want a pop of colour on my lower lids.

Pigmentation: PK-3 is more pigmented than SV-3 and it's reasonable because SV-3 contains a million times more glitter than PK-3.

Swatches under camera flash, after smudging
Smudge-proof? Definitely not. As seen from the photo above, I smudged the swatches just slightly and the swatches blended with each other. Hence, my tip is to use a similarly-coloured eyeshadow and apply it after KATE My Colour Pencil's application. This way, it will not be so easily smudge-able.

Water-proof? Nope nope nope. Hence, don't use it on a rainy day or on a day when you know you will feel emotional.

Longevity: This product needs touching up, for sure. Not that I'm complaining about it. I think one application will last around 4 hours? Longer if you apply a similar coloured eyeshadow above it. SV-3 definitely needs more attention in the touching-up department because the colour fades away quite quickly.

Will I buy it again? I'm still thinking about it. I don't fancy the pink colour and if there's a really good taupe/brown/mauve colour available, I might get them! The silver is a great product for my inner eye corners though and a back-up will be needed.

Thank you for reading and have a nice weekend! Hoorah first weekend of 2013! :)

Review: KATE reflect mirror eyes palette in GY-1

I have always wanted to try KATE products ever since they were launched at Watsons, but hesitation always kicked in because of the hefty price tags. I'm a poor undergraduate so splurging on cosmetics is quite a challenge. This is why I love Watsons Members Sales! In their latest Members Sales, they had a KATE product bundle and the bundle was only S$9.90!

Included in the bundle was the KATE reflect mirror eyes palette in GY-1 and I think it originally retails for close to S$30 or slightly more.

Just to make sure that everyone is on the same page, Japanese eyeshadows and eyeshadow palettes usually consist of mostly shimmery and glittery colours. It's very rare to find a matte or even a semi-matte eyeshadow colour in a Japanese line. Also, the lighter colours seem to be more glittery than pigmented. The dark colours are usually shimmery and well-pigmented, across all Japanese brands. With this knowledge, you know what you are getting into when buying Japanese-brand eyeshadows!

Ingredients List

Colours: KATE reflect mirror eyes palette in GY-1 is a very curious palette. I still cannot fathom which colour group it really belongs to. At one glance, the colours look greyish, but after a close inspection, taupes and browns start to appear before your eyes. It is very curious indeed, but I like it! The middle shimmery white is gorgeous, and the gun metal (with a hint of blue under camera flash) is an amazing crease or eyeliner colour.

Pigmentation: As warned before, pigmentation is not something that should be highly expected. The thing about Japanese-brand eyeshadows is they are buildable. You can layer as much as you want and not risk looking like a clown, but still can have your glitter fix. The middle shimmery white is a gorgeous shade (as said again and again haha). I can spam this colour on the inner eye area to make myself look more awake, and I think I'm going to overuse it.

Application: I'm most happy and most pleasantly surprised by the application process. Usuaully with glitter eyeshadows, application's a bitch since the glitters will start transferring everywhere as you apply, and at the end of it all, you like a discoball panda. It's just not nice. With the KATE reflect mirror eyes palette, NONE of those glitters came tumbling downnnn downnnn downnnnn. I'm so impressed I"m going crazy with my words. NONE, ZILCH, NADAH, NOTHING. Even when I was blending the three colours together, I see no fall-outs. MAJOR IMPRESSED, YES I AM.

Longevity: It's definitely a long-wearing palette. Colours stayed put throughout the night, with no signs of melting or fading. Amazing quality, really. Still majorly impressed with the no-glitter-fallout fact. What an amazing palette!

Above is a look that I created using the palette. I do apologise for my deeply hooded double eyelid because you can't really see the colours, but I really do love this palette! Definitely going to be a staple! :)

Hope the new year has been great and thanks for reading! :)

Happy 2013! :) New Year resolutions?

Everyone's saying the same thing - 2012 passed so fast, they didn't even know what happened to time! It's quite bewildering because I can vividly still remember the moment when we counted down to 2012 at The Beer Market. Fast forward one year later, we were once again at The Beer Market, but this time welcoming 2013 with no fear.

2012 has been a significant year. For me, it was a year full of new discoveries.

I interned at MTV Asia and worked with an amazing bunch of people. Of course, there are always people there who are not worthy of even my thoughts (hint: the blocking bonanza. I think he is just purist and will like to keep desirable, at least according to his biased standards, people on his list of privileged people), but 95% of my experience at MTV has been a positive one. I met so many new people that definitely changed my life - Lirong, Lizhen, June, Lisa, Aaron, Rachel, Aloyscious, Jaslyn, Leonard, William, Helen, Ivan, Edith, Herbert, Anthony, Syazwan, etc, etc etcccccc. Without them, my internship experience will be close to excruciating.

While interning at MTV Asia, I also discovered that I was good with what I do. I always can do a variety of things, but it's rare to find something that I'm good at. Much like how every time I introduce Yinghui a new iPhone game app, she always manages to slay my high-score at an alarmingly fast time. ALWAYS. I'm still bitter about Office Dance. HAHA. But anyway, coming back to this discovery of skill, because I realised I was good at it, I grew to enjoy what I did - which was rare in the industry. This is part of the reason why I want to go back to MTV Asia as a researcher. However, as kengyang has very consistently drilled in my head, I had to keep my options open.

2012 was also the year in which I discovered I finally had the willpower to lose the flab. In the first half of the year, I lost 7kg. Not very significant to some people, but to me it's a definite improvement since the numbers have only been on the rise for years. I have gained back some of the weight, for sure, but not all of it. Holidays, are holidays, no? Since the festive (or the eating) season is over, it's time to get back on track with the weight-loss regime. I'm determined to lose another 5kg on top of the previous 7kg.

The second half of 2012 was largely focused on Final Year Project. What started off as an adrenaline rush fell flat as fast as it started. Very unfortunately, our first FYP professor, Dr Wayne Fu, passed away suddenly just a few days after school started. It was a shock and my FYP members were still trying to get as much information from as many people as possible that night because we refused to believe that it really happened. From then on, everything went extra fast, from meeting Marko, to meeting Bo, to rethinking our FYP and then finally to what we have today. To be frank, I am infinitely grateful to my FYP members. Imagine having something exciting in the works, and then to have it ripped away from you, and then you have to start anew with new ideas that you have to come out with. If I were to do my FYP alone, I don't think I would be able to regroup my thoughts so quickly. Hence, Jeremy, Kokky and Konkon, thank you for being such awesome FYP mates. Also, Eve, stop telling Jeremy to drop us? I am scared. HAHA.

2012 was also a year I discovered that I can do something useful with my blog - this blog. My readership started to increase quite significantly and the blog started to generate some income for me. It's not a lot, but it's definitely welcome. I was lazy on some weeks, and didn't update as much as I wanted to, so I vow to be more regular in posting my reviews in 2013! Thank you to all my readers who made everything possible with this blog. :)

Last, but definitely not least, 2012 was a year when I discovered the true meaning behind love. Nope, not about boy-girl love (but still, thank you Kengyang for an amazing 2012! Without you, I'd have crumbled during my dark times.), but more of family love. Of course, it's still not applied to my own family, that has got to be a challenge. I met Kengyang's family for the first time at the end of the year, and to be honest, I was really afraid at the beginning. Jitters aside, his family is really a 180-degree difference from mine; two extreme ends of a spectrum. I have never experienced a family that is so candid with one another, and so ... for the lack of better words, tight with one another. That was the reason why I couldn't open myself up, it's a complete shock to me because I was brought up in hostility and mostly silence or arguments. Happy moments are never to be expected in my family, and almost never happened. On the other hand, his family jokes about everything, and laughs at everything. I'm quite sad that I couldn't really talk much with them because although I know every gesture of theirs was genuine, I couldn't receive with a fully open heart. In 2013, I need to change this because seriously, I think I deserve some family love after 23 years of not having almost none.

Of course, not all about my family is a nightmare. I know my mom cares, but she just has too much to handle on her own. I learnt that since young, so I don't blame her at all. My sister has grown up to be a really fine lady (though I hope the tantrums stop, PLEASE) and it's nice having another female in the house with whom I can talk to.

Now, talking about new year resolutions. I want to not bother about them because I always forget about them after the first month of the new year. However, I figure I can make some quantified goals? Whether or not I will achieve these goals is another story so here goes nothing...

In 2013,

  • I'd like to lose another 5kg. This will bring my total weight loss to 12kg.
  • I need to go to Japan and Taiwan.
  • I need to stop hating myself so much.
  • Care less, hurt less (said by the wise boyfriend last night)
  • More love for this blog!!
And that's all. They're all very simple, but extremely difficult to achieve. Wish me luck guys.

Happy New Year to all my readers! I hope 2013 has already treated you well and will treat you well throughout! :)
